“Auto Metal Scrap is committed to offering top scrap prices based on the quality of the Scrap.”
The production of new stainless steel is made up of 25 percent old scrap – from end-of-life products – 35 percent new scrap – from material returned from production and manufacturing – and 40 percent raw materials – such as ferrochromium and ferronickel.
The long-term average growth rate of stainless steel is approximately five percent every year. In fact, even if all of the stainless steel produced was returned, the available material would only account for around 35 percent of today’s stainless steel production and 20 percent of today’s production if the average useful life was 20 years and 30 years respectively.
Subsequently, stainless steel remains part of a closed-loop system that’s sustainable and great for the wider environment as it can be re-used without any degradation.
The stainless steel scrap price for commonly used grades usually ranges between $1.01 per kg and $1.68 per kg. Prices can change frequently due to various international and local market factors, so it’s always best to rely on experienced professionals to get the best stainless steel recycling rate.
Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy made by combining different metals. Over time, these combinations have resulted in more than 3,000 variations of stainless steel. Based on metal composition, stainless steel is generally classified into the following types:
Austenitic (200 Series):
Also known as the 200 series, this type is made from iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese alloys.
Austenitic (300 Series):
Commonly referred to as the 300 series, this type is non-magnetic and mainly composed of iron, chromium, and nickel. It is the most widely used stainless steel and is commonly found in grades 304 and 316. These grades are used in household appliances, cooking equipment, tubes, bars, rails, sheets, and plates.
Grade 304 contains iron, chromium, and nickel, while grade 316 includes molybdenum, which gives it higher corrosion resistance and a higher scrap value.
Ferritic:
This type retains iron’s magnetic properties and contains high levels of chromium and carbon. It is known for being corrosion-resistant and flexible, making it suitable for automotive parts, kitchen items, and industrial equipment.
Martensitic:
Martensitic stainless steel is the least common type. It has lower corrosion resistance and often requires protective coatings. However, it is valued for its hardness and high tensile strength.
If your stainless steel scrap is not clearly labelled with its grade or quality, it can be difficult to accurately identify the alloy type and determine the correct recycling price.
